Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center occupies a large campus in Hershey, Pennsylvania, roughly fifteen miles east of Harrisburg. Established in the 1960s through a gift from the Milton S. Hershey Trust, it functions as the academic medical center for Penn State, integrating the College of Medicine, a research enterprise, and clinical care on one site. It serves as the primary referral destination for central Pennsylvania, drawing patients from a wide rural and small-city region for care unavailable closer to home.
Clinical services span cardiology and cardiac surgery, neurosciences and neurosurgery, transplant, cancer care through the Penn State Cancer Institute, orthopedics, and trauma and emergency services, with pediatric care delivered through Penn State Health Children's Hospital on the same campus. Nurses practice across adult and pediatric intensive care, neonatal intensive care, cardiac and surgical step-down, medical-surgical, transplant, oncology, perioperative, emergency, and labor and delivery units, with acuity reflecting a quaternary center handling the region's most complex transfers. As a teaching hospital, it trains residents, fellows, medical students, and nursing students throughout, so bedside staff work alongside learners as a routine condition of practice.
