The University of Maryland Medical Center occupies a campus in downtown Baltimore, Maryland, tracing its origins to the founding of the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1807, which makes it one of the oldest academic medical centers in the country. It serves as the flagship of the University of Maryland Medical System and the primary teaching hospital for the university's schools of medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and other health professions. Its downtown location places it amid the neighborhoods it serves while drawing referrals from across the state and region.
The medical center is best known for the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, the pioneering trauma facility whose model shaped emergency care nationally and which operates as a dedicated hospital within the hospital. Other strengths include transplant, cardiology and cardiac surgery, neurosciences, cancer care through the Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center, and high-risk obstetrics with neonatal intensive care. Nurses practice across trauma, intensive care, transplant, cardiac, medical-surgical, oncology, perioperative, emergency, and labor and delivery units, with acuity among the highest in the region. Teaching runs throughout, so bedside staff work alongside residents, fellows, and nursing students continuously.
