MedStar Washington Hospital Center operates its Nurse Residency Program from its campus in Washington, DC. The year-long program follows the Vizient/AACN model and supports more than 350 new-to-practice nurses annually, making it the only CCNE-accredited nurse residency program in the nation's capital.
New nurses receive a three- to six-month unit-based orientation alongside monthly seminars and learning activities, guided by coaches, educators, and nurse specialists. Each resident develops an individual professional development plan and completes an evidence-based practice project tied to a specialty of their choosing, with training available in areas such as critical care, cardiac services, and perioperative nursing.
The program holds accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and has earned re-accreditation from CCNE, reflecting its sustained record of quality. Its scale and specialty breadth make it one of the larger, more established nurse residency programs among Washington, DC-area hospitals.
