Curtis Anderson, Founder and CEO of Nursa, recently appeared on The Edge Podcast, hosted by Taylor Covey, where he shared his early influences, education, and journey from a small-town Idaho boy to the leader of a national healthcare staffing platform.
Early influences and education
Curtis Anderson grew up in a rural Idaho town, and his journey with technology started when he was still young. His parents focused on educational gifts, and when he turned 11, they gave him a computer, which sparked his interest in technology. When the internet was taking its first steps, Anderson shared that he knew working on the farm wouldn’t be his future.
During high school, Anderson joined an IT program created by his teacher, Markus, where he had the opportunity to build his first machine, learn about its basic components, and how it operates.
Anderson remembers a specific conversation with his teacher in which he was asked what he would like to do in the future, and he answered, "I want to build websites." And so he did, starting by creating a website for his school, which turned into working professionally on contract to build other websites.
Inspired by his family's entrepreneurial history, Anderson knew he wanted to create his own company.
Reimagining healthcare staffing
Anderson always knew he could solve healthcare problems through technology, by reinventing healthcare, making it a little better, and reducing lag time. He considered nurses, their resiliency, and their status as among the greatest human beings on earth. He wondered, how he could help them?
The telephone process between the nurse, the facility, and an intermediary caught Anderson’s attention because traditional methods slow coverage time, are economically expensive, and are outdated.
He saw an opportunity to reimagine healthcare, and so he built Nursa.
Nurse is a healthcare staffing platform that connects per diem nurses and facilities without unnecessary bureaucracy or intermediaries, resulting in quick, trusted coverage and cost savings for a facility’s budget.
There’s always a way, and you can always rebuild
At home, there are 2 principles that Anderson likes to remind his children:
- There’s always a way.
- You can always rebuild.
This empowering mindset is reflected in Nursa’s principles: execution is everything, and we have the space to make decisions and be wrong.
On the podcast, Anderson explains that he is interested in how people recognize they are wrong and how quickly they move in the right direction.
“Because speed and context are their own competitive advantages.” - Curtis Anderson, Founder and CEO of Nursa.
Podcast host Covey sees Anderson as a leader who:
- Allows people to make mistakes
- Shows his people the path
- Supports them along the way
At the end of this episode, Anderson says that he wants to change how people interact with clinicians and ensure that a nurse is at the bedside of every patient who needs one.
