Baylor University Medical Center

Baylor University Medical Center occupies a large campus on Gaston Avenue in East Dallas, just beyond downtown, and has cared for the city since opening in the early 1900s. Today it serves as a flagship of Baylor Scott & White Health, a nonprofit system operating across central and north Texas. The hospital functions as a full academic medical center, combining high-acuity inpatient care with graduate medical education and clinical research. Despite the shared name, it is a separate organization from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

Clinical strengths include one of the country's larger solid organ transplant programs, along with cardiovascular care, cancer treatment through a large outpatient cancer center, neurosciences, orthopedics, women's services, and emergency care. Nurses practice across intensive care, step-down, medical-surgical, perioperative, transplant, oncology, labor and delivery, and emergency units, with acuity that reflects the hospital's role as a referral destination for complex cases. Teaching affiliations and in-house residency programs mean bedside staff work alongside residents and students routinely. Compared with other Dallas hospitals, Baylor University Medical Center pairs the specialty depth of a tertiary referral center with the resources of one of the state's largest nonprofit systems.
