The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) is a public academic health system and part of the University of Texas System. UTMB operates four hospitals along with several schools and research institutes, giving nurse residents access to a range of clinical settings for training.
UTMB's Nurse Residency Program is designed for newly graduated registered nurses moving from the classroom into professional practice. The program focuses on building clinical competency and confidence, offering emotional support during a demanding first year, and helping new nurses adjust to the pace and responsibility of hospital-based care.
By pairing academic resources from a major public health system with structured, hospital-based training, UTMB aims to support long-term recruitment and retention of nursing talent within its own hospitals. New cohorts begin periodically throughout the year, giving graduating nurses several entry points into the program.
