Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital anchors a campus on North Elam Avenue in Greensboro, North Carolina, and serves as the flagship of Cone Health, a nonprofit system operating hospitals and outpatient sites across the Piedmont Triad. Opened in 1953 through a gift from the Cone family, the hospital has grown into the region's principal referral destination, drawing patients from Greensboro and the surrounding counties for services smaller community hospitals send onward.
Clinical strengths include emergency and trauma care, cardiac and vascular medicine with open-heart surgery, cancer treatment, neurosciences and stroke care, orthopedics and joint replacement, and inpatient rehabilitation. The system's women's and children's services operate from a nearby dedicated campus. Nurses practice across intensive care, cardiovascular and surgical step-down, medical-surgical, telemetry, perioperative, emergency, oncology, and rehabilitation units, with acuity that reflects a tertiary center handling complex transfers alongside community volume. Graduate medical education gives the hospital a teaching component, and it serves as a clinical placement site for nursing programs throughout the region. Compared with the academic centers in Winston-Salem and Chapel Hill, Cone offers comparable specialty depth in a system rooted in community ownership.
