UWM’s nursing education is defined by its scale and its commitment to urban health. The traditional BSN is a competitive program that prepares students through a rigorous "Pre-Nursing" to "Professional" sequence. For career changers, the Direct-Entry Master of Nursing (MN) allows students with a prior non-nursing degree to become an RN while earning a Master’s in just two years. Current RNs often utilize the UW Flexible Option, a 100% online, competency-based BSN completion track. At the doctoral level, UWM offers a BS-to-DNP with five highly specialized tracks, including Family Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatric Mental Health, boasting a 100% APRN certification pass rate for recent cohorts.
A cornerstone of the UWM experience is the James and Yvonne Ziemer Clinical Simulation Center, a 22,000-square-foot "mini-hospital" located in the Northwest Quadrant. The center features 10 high-fidelity patient simulators, an intensive care unit, and a labor and delivery suite. Unique to UWM is the inclusion of a realistic apartment setting with running water, designed for students to practice home health assessments and discharge planning. Clinical rotations are equally robust, leveraging partnerships with elite systems such as Advocate Aurora Health, Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin, and Children’s Wisconsin. These partnerships, combined with intensive simulation training, resulted in an impressive 95.93% aggregate NCLEX pass rate across all UWM programs in 2024.
Compared to other Wisconsin institutions, UWM stands out for its interprofessional education (IPE), where nursing students train alongside peers in biomedical sciences and rehabilitation technology. The school also offers unique global health immersions, such as its faculty-led program in Thailand. Admission for the traditional BSN remains selective, typically requiring a 3.0 minimum GPA in science prerequisites like Biochemistry and Anatomy & Physiology, with a "B" or better in core courses. In early 2026, the school reaffirmed its leadership in the field by being named a 2026 Fellow Award recipient by the Wisconsin Academy for its public service and healthcare innovation.
