Key takeaways:

A former certified nursing assistant (CNA) from Zachary, Louisiana, has been apprehended with negligent homicide following the death of a patient, while she was using a hydraulic lift to move the patient, according to the state attorney general’s office.

Authorities responsible for the case report that Diamond Johnson’s accusation came after an investigation conducted by the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit under the Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill.

At the time of the incident, CNA Johnson was employed at Jefferson Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, a nursing facility in Baton Rouge.

In June 2024, during her work routine, she was operating a hydraulic lift by herself to transfer a female resident from a chair to her bed when the patient slipped from the lift and dismounted on its base, authorities said.

Roughly 40 minutes later, the patient became unresponsive and could not be revived.

An autopsy determined that the cause of death was complications related to blunt force injuries sustained during the fall, according to the attorney general’s office.

On October 2, a Grand Jury was convened, and Diamond Johnson was formally indicted for negligent homicide.

“These cases are never easy, but my duty as Attorney General is to protect our state’s most vulnerable citizens,” wrote Attorney General Liz Murrill in a public statement on Facebook.
