Malcom Randall VA Medical Center
The Malcom Randall VA Medical Center operates a Post-Baccalaureate Nurse Residency Program built on its long-standing partnership with the University of Florida College of Nursing. The yearlong program pairs newly graduated BSN nurses with preceptors and mentors, giving them protected time to focus on skill-building rather than juggling a full patient assignment from day one.
Throughout the year, residents complete extensive orientation and training, work toward strengthening clinical competencies, and complete a quality-improvement or system-redesign scholarly project tied to their unit. The structured mentorship model is credited with raising one-year nurse retention at the facility from 69 percent in 2007 to an average of 91 percent since the program began.
The program was accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, making it the first nurse residency at any VA facility in the country to earn that distinction and one of only a small number of formally accredited residencies nationwide. That track record makes it a well-established option for new nurses beginning careers in federal health care.
