The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth provides a comprehensive pathway for nursing students at every career stage. The traditional four-year BSN is a direct-entry program where students begin their nursing orientation in the first year, focusing on science foundations before advancing to clinical therapeutics. For those with a prior degree, the 17-month Accelerated BSN (ABSN) offers a hybrid model with online coursework and intensive in-person clinicals. UMassD is also a leader in graduate education, offering an online MSN in Nursing Education and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) tracks for Family Nurse Practitioners (FNP) and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNP). The BSN curriculum requires 120 credits and is built on a "seamless progression" model, emphasizing leadership, informatics, and population-based care.
A central feature of the UMassD experience is the Elizabeth Pennington Simulation Laboratory and Debriefing Suite. This state-of-the-art facility includes specialized units for Adult ICU, Pediatrics, and Labor & Delivery, as well as a simulated home setting to prepare students for community health nursing. The lab features "Nursing Anne" simulators and high-fidelity manikins that allow students to practice complex care management in a safe environment. Clinical rotations begin in the sophomore year, with students placed at elite regional partners such as Southcoast Health (St. Luke's and Charlton Memorial), Cape Cod Healthcare, and Lifespan hospitals in Rhode Island. These experiences culminate in a 1:1 senior preceptorship where students work alongside professional RNs to manage full patient loads.
The program’s reputation is backed by exceptional data: the Class of 2025 Accelerated BSN cohort achieved a 100% NCLEX-RN pass rate, while traditional BSN graduates consistently maintain a high three-year trend (90%+). Graduates are highly recruited, with many receiving job offers at their senior capstone sites before graduation.
