The University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing is a leader in baccalaureate and doctoral education, offering a rigorous environment for aspiring nurse clinicians and scientists. The traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is a four-year, 120-credit program that admits high school graduates directly. For those with existing degrees, a 15-month accelerated BSN is available in a hybrid format. The curriculum focuses on core competencies in nursing science, pharmacology, and pathophysiology, integrating evidence-based practice and critical thinking throughout all levels of study. Advanced practice roles are supported by MSN and DNP tracks, including specializations in Nurse Anesthesia and Psychiatric Mental Health.

Rotations take place within the extensive University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) network, including world-renowned sites like Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and Magee-Womens Hospital. On-campus, the Clinical Skills and Simulation labs provide high-fidelity environments for mastering complex procedures. Graduates are exceptionally prepared for the NCLEX-RN, with recent pass rates reaching 97%. Programs
A BSN is a 4-year university RN degree, widely preferred by employers and required for many advanced roles, whose graduates are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN.
An MSN is a 2–3 year graduate degree that prepares RNs for advanced practice, leadership, and specialized roles such as nurse practitioner or nurse educator.
A DNP is the highest clinical nursing degree, taking 2–4 years, preparing nurses for advanced practice, executive leadership, and policy roles—distinct from the research-focused PhD.
A post-graduate APRN certificate is a 12–24 month credential that lets MSN-prepared nurses add or change an advanced practice specialty without earning a second degree.
