- Location: 5295 South Commerce Drive, Suite 600, Salt Lake City, UT, 84107
Why should I donate blood?
People donate blood to save lives.
Blood is an essential resource that patients need when they undergo surgeries or receive treatment for severe injuries, chronic illnesses, and cancer.
Your blood contribution is a great way to help these patients.
Types of donation
You can do a traditional whole blood donation or a Power Red donation.
- Whole blood: This is the most common type of blood donation. You give about a pint of blood.
- Power Red: In a Power Red donation, your red blood cells are separated from the plasma and platelets, which are returned to you. You can give twice the amount of red cells in one sitting.
How long does the blood donation process take?
The entire appointment takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes. However, the actual blood draw only takes 8-10 minutes. The rest of the appointment time involves:
- Registration
- Brief health history check
- Short recovery period with snacks
Generally, you can donate whole blood every 56 days or do a Power Red donation every 112 days.
Is a Power Red donation shorter or longer?
Actually, it is longer. A Power Red donation uses an apheresis machine to separate the red blood cells, then returns the plasma and platelets to you. This makes the process 20-30 minutes longer.
Most people who choose a Power Red donation report feeling more hydrated after than with a traditional donation.
What are the blood donation requirements?
To meet American Red Cross eligibility, donors must:
- Be at least 17 years old.
- Weigh at least 110 pounds.
- Be in generally good physical health.
It is highly recommended that donors eat a healthy meal and drink plenty of water before their appointment. Do not fast before donating blood.
Other eligibility criteria may apply, so it’s always best to check with your state's blood donation requirements.
To get a complete list of requirements for donating blood in your state, you can start by visiting the American Red Cross's official website.
