HIT Consultant recently covered the results of a survey conducted by Nursa, a platform connecting healthcare facilities with clinicians for per diem or PRN shifts.
The survey obtained responses from over 2,000 nurses who use the PRN nursing platform across 44 states.
Results of the per diem nursing survey
The following trends can be gleaned from the over 2,000 Nursa users who responded to the survey:
- Combined employment and PRN shifts: Most clinicians (72 percent) who pick up PRN nursing jobs also have full- or part-time positions, primarily in healthcare settings. Many nurses pick up per diem shifts to supplement their income and diversify their work experience.
- Exclusive PRN work: Nearly one-third (28 percent) of respondents work exclusively through PRN staffing platforms. A significant portion of nurses are drawn to the flexibility and greater work-life balance that PRN jobs facilitate.
- Active job seekers: One-third (33 percent) of respondents were actively seeking full-time or part-time positions. PRN jobs can lead to internal staff positions.
- Casual job seekers: An additional 10 percent were open to accepting employment. PRN jobs allow nurses to explore different settings, helping them make informed decisions regarding employment offers.
- Number of staffing apps: Most nurses reported using more than one staffing platform (2.69 apps, on average) to find per diem shifts.
- Number of shifts: Based on reported work hours, Nursa users work 1.5 times more shifts per month than nurses in full- or part-time positions.
