Stony Brook University Hospital anchors the medical campus of Stony Brook University on Long Island's north shore, roughly sixty miles east of Manhattan. Part of the State University of New York system, it functions as the academic medical center for the region and the only tertiary care hospital in Suffolk County, which makes it the destination for the county's most complex cases rather than one option among several. Stony Brook Children's Hospital operates within the facility, and the hospital serves as the primary teaching site for the university's schools of medicine, nursing, and health professions.
Clinical services include a Level I trauma center, cardiology and cardiac surgery, neurosciences and neurosurgery, cancer care, transplant, orthopedics, and comprehensive emergency services, alongside obstetrics with neonatal intensive care and pediatric subspecialty care. Nurses practice across adult and pediatric intensive care, neonatal intensive care, cardiac and surgical step-down, medical-surgical, trauma, oncology, perioperative, emergency, and labor and delivery units, with acuity reflecting the hospital's role as the region's referral endpoint. Given its academic mission, bedside staff work routinely alongside residents, fellows, and nursing students. As a state facility, employment terms differ from those at Long Island's private health systems.
