LPNs Earn High Per Diem Rates with PRN Shifts in Salt Lake City

Vibrant. Prosperous. Beautiful. There’s no doubt, especially with a growth of about 121,000 new residents annually from 2015 to 2019, that Salt Lake City (SLC) is a strategic and fun place to live and work.

SLC is a colorful place known for being the capital of Utah, for having a big arts and film scene, beautiful nature (especially a big and diverse population of birds and vast salt flats), and for being home to many unique things (for example, the big Salt Lake with its two distinct colors and the Family History Library).

Salt Lake City may have many other attractions that make it unique in the eyes of its residents, but one of the most attractive features for nurses is the high number of licensed practical nurse (LPN) jobs in Salt Lake City that have been popping up over the past few years.

Why Should LPNs Choose Salt Lake City, Utah?

LPNs can find diverse opportunities in the Salt Lake City metro. Here are some of the reasons that make this city an excellent destination for LPNs:

  • Per diem and other LPN jobs are easy to find: There are a number of different types of facilities in which LPNs can work in Salt Lake City, for example, nursing homes, hospitals, government, schools, clinics, long-term care facilities, etc.
  • LPNs can get per diem jobs with high pay: Nursing pay in SLC is quite high, especially when it comes to per diem licensed practical nurse jobs, which tend to have a higher hourly wage than staff positions.
  • Nursing professionals enjoy the working conditions in Salt Lake City: LPNs, registered nurses (RNs), and certified nursing assistants (CNAs) in SLC can generally expect working conditions at the hospitals, clinics, and medical centers in this city. From good salaries to the possibilities for professional growth in working environments—there are many examples of great working conditions for licensed practical nurses in Salt Lake City.
  • LPNs enjoy job security thanks to the low unemployment rate: Another great advantage of this city is that the unemployment rate is very low (2.5%). For the nursing sector, it is almost null since there is a shortage of nurses in almost all the healthcare facilities in Salt Lake City, which has experienced a huge population growth.
  • Nurses serve a friendly population befitting a happy city: The state of Utah, in general, has a reputation for being a friendly state with high levels of happiness. This is a great advantage when treating patients closely, as LPNs do.

It is wonderful to notice the many advantages for LPNs working and living in SLC, and there are countless other reasons that make it a great city for all types of nursing professionals (RNs, CNAs, and LPNs alike).

How Can I Become an LPN in Utah?

Aspiring LPNs in Utah need to complete a program accredited by the Utah Board of Nursing. Subsequently, they must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN) and apply for licensure with the State of Utah Department of Commerce and pay your fee to the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL). Once they are licensed, they can begin working in any city in the state of Utah and apply for the highest-paying licensed practical nurse jobs in Utah.

Although it is true that due to the shortage of nurses in Salt Lake City, there are many nursing jobs in Utah available for new nurses, new LPNs can benefit from having more experience if they choose to pursue per diem jobs.

This is because Salt Lake City healthcare facilities prefer to hire LPNs with some experience—although, as mentioned before, because of the great need, it is not difficult for LPNs to get per diem jobs even if they are new or relatively inexperienced, especially in settings such as skilled nursing, long-term care, assisted living, and medical clinics.

What Is the Average LPN Salary in Salt Lake City?

LPNs in Salt Lake City earn an average salary of $60,370 per year or $29.02 per hour. This hourly wage is higher when LPNs do per diem (also called PRN) jobs. Per diem jobs tend to have a greater hourly pay since facilities are in dire need of healthcare professionals and are thus willing to pay more.

What Is Per Diem LPN Work?

Per diem LPN work or PRN LPN work refers to professional nurses working on an as-needed basis. Generally, as healthcare facilities have staffing shortages, there is a crisis that can be solved by contracting per diem nurses to improve the nurse-to-patient ratios, improve the safety and quality of patient care, and allow all healthcare staff in a given facility to feel safe and comfortable by not having too many patients to care for or the added stress of no nurses to assist with the demands of the facility.

Per diem work is highly important, and it is changing and revolutionizing the way nursing is being practiced. For most, it is a very significant change, which requires a facility's healthcare staff to be willing to accept contracted workers and adapt to new situations.

What Are Some Advantages for Per Diem LPNs Working in Salt Lake City?

There are many advantages of working as a PRN LPN in SLC, including the following:

  • Earn better wages: As we mentioned earlier, wages are usually much higher when it comes to PRN nursing jobs in Salt Lake City. Another reason for this is that healthcare facilities do not pay insurance or benefits to LPNs who pick up per diem shifts, and this allows the facilities to save money and pay more per hour of work.
  • Get different experiences: For many LPNs, working in one job means getting used to only one type of patient, which is not always an advantage. However, by picking up per diem jobs, LPNs can experience different types of settings and patients, different facilities, different age groups, etc. This is a great advantage, as it brings color to the job. Plus, it can also serve to know what area the LPN works best in or what area they like best, so they can decide what jobs to take on in the future.
  • Have more time availability: When LPNs can choose their shifts, they can adjust their schedule as they see fit. This allows them to have days off to spend time with family, pursue hobbies, spend time with friends or pets, or travel.

What’s the Job Market Outlook for LPNs in Salt Lake City?

There is an excellent job market outlook for LPN jobs in Salt Lake City. In general, the population growth is high, which contributes to the unemployment rate in Salt Lake City being consistently low in the healthcare sector, which, in turn, means that finding jobs in SLC for LPNs is and will be very easy in the foreseeable future. LPN salaries, or average annual incomes, are also expected to rise as the work that these nurses perform is of extreme importance to the patients. In fact, LPNs constitute the largest workforce in terms of personalized patient care in many institutions.
