What Do Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) Do?

Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) care for patients by monitoring their health, vital signs, and general status. They are also responsible for the primary daily care of cleaning and feeding, changing dressings, inserting catheters, and some administrative tasks.

Between 2020 and 2030, employment of LPNs will grow by 9 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics. Due to numerous retirements, about 60,000 vacancies for LPNs will open each year, on average, during the decade.

LPNs may choose to specialize, either because the work is more exciting and enjoyable or to increase their salary. For example, they may work in a progressive care unit, transitioning between the intensive care unit (ICU) and the recovery rooms where the patient does not need as much monitoring and care. In the progressive care unit, LPNs may see cases of heart disease, post-cardiac cath, stroke, or sepsis, among the most common diseases. They will have to attend to these patients with more attention than they usually would, as they require more time and care because their condition is quite unstable.

They may also want to specialize in a certified telemetry unit, a team in a hospital reserved for patients who need continuous electronic monitoring of their condition. It is possible that in a telemetry-certified unit, they may encounter patients who have complications associated with cardiac conditions, coronary bypass surgeries, or stent placements.

LPNs have an essential job for patients in a hospital, and they are in high demand in all of these jobs. They can find work very quickly in Miami, Florida, especially if they are willing to work PRN (pro re nata).

PRN means that there is a requirement for nurses in some job position that needs to be filled ASAP and that any LPN can fill it if they want to. There are many advantages for LPNs to work this way: one significant advantage is that the hours can be picked, and if they want to work longer hours, it's their choice, leaving them time to pursue other family and personal activities happily. Another great advantage is the pay, because in total, per hour, an LPN earns more if they choose to work PRN.

A straightforward way to find PRN jobs is through the Nursa app, which connects LPNs and nurses in general with the hospitals and workplaces where they are needed. For Miami, Florida, it is as simple as creating an account on the app and uploading the necessary certifications to start working, many hospitals are looking for nurses urgently in the area, and each nurse can choose which area to work in.
